While the current talk is still in the rumour stage, there does appear to be a serious link between Rangers and Real Betis defender Nobel Mendy. The interest looks genuine, and with the pieces seemingly in place, we could well see movement on this one in the coming days.

Russell Martin is keen to bring in a left-sided centre-back to complement John Souttar and Nasser Djiga, both of whom are more naturally right-footed. A more balanced pairing—and greater depth in the defence—would greatly benefit Rangers as they aim to compete on multiple fronts this season.

Who Is Nobel Mendy?

Age & Background: Born on 3 September 2004 in Guédiawaye, Senegal, Mendy is a rising 20-year-old defender. He progressed through youth setups at Guédiawaye FC, SPN Vernon, Pacy Ménilles RC, and FC Mantois before signing his professional contract with Paris FC in 2021.

Betis Career: He spent time on loan at Betis B before earning a permanent switch. While most of his minutes came with the reserves, he was elevated to the first-team picture in La Liga and continental competition in 2024–25.

Physical & Technical Profile: At roughly 1.87–1.89 m tall, left-footed, and mobile, Mendy embodies the physical traits suited to Scottish football—and mirrors the “Djiga 2.0” profile Martin seems fond of.

Potential & Performance: Though still short on first-team minutes, Mendy showed promise when called upon—earning starts against top La Liga sides and performing well in key European fixtures. Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini regards him as the fourth-choice central defender, and he impressed in matches like the Conference League tie against Fiorentina

Why Rangers Should Be Interested

Defensive Balance With both Souttar and Djiga stronger on the right, a natural left-sided centre-back would provide better balance and allow more tactical flexibility across the backline.

Age & Adaptability At 20, Mendy is still developing, highly coachable, and primed for growth. His tall and robust frame suits the demands of Scottish football.

European Ambitions Rangers are assured Europa League action and remain contenders for Champions League qualification. Joining a project under Martin, which is showing clear upward momentum, could be attractive to an ambitious young player like Mendy

Room for Growth Though he lacks first-team experience, that makes him an ideal backup who can learn the Rangers way and gradually earn more minutes. His physicality and attitude suggest that with patience, he could become a reliable regular.

Club History & Achievements Mendy debuted professionally with Paris FC in Ligue 2 at age 18, then moved to Betis where he helped their B side, and made senior appearances in La Liga, Conference League, and Copa del Rey. He also was part of the Betis squad that finished runners-up in the 2024–25 Europa Conference League.

What Rangers Fans Might Expect

Supporters can look forward to a powerful, athletic defender who brings presence on the left side of central defence. Expect a young player eager to learn, grow, and stake his claim—with the physical tools to make a strong impression during set pieces, aerial duels, and one-on-one defensive situations. Martin’s system of developing young defenders could help Mendy flourish at Ibrox.
