Mohamed Diomande has become a fan favourite at Ibrox. His composure on the ball, clever passing, and calmness under pressure have all helped him settle into life at Rangers with ease. Still only 23, he’s one of those players most supporters would put firmly on the “keep” list — but in the current financial climate, no player is untouchable.

Raw Talent and Room to Grow

There’s no doubt Diomande has talent in abundance. His ability to glide past players and keep the ball moving quickly has been a major asset in Rangers’ midfield. But like many young midfielders, he’s not the finished article. There have been moments where he’s been caught dawdling or overplaying in dangerous areas, and his decision-making under pressure still has room for refinement.

What sets him apart, though, is his engine. He’s consistently run deep into matches, despite the intense fixture schedule Rangers have faced. Combine that with his versatility — operating as a box-to-box midfielder, a holding presence, or even further forward — and it’s easy to see why he’s been touted as one of the best young prospects to come out of the Ivory Coast in recent years.

Making His Mark at Ibrox

Since arriving from FC Nordsjælland in January 2024 for a reported £4.3 million, Diomande has impressed in big moments. He made his debut in a high-pressure match against Hibs, showing immediate composure and control.

His first goal at Ibrox came in a 3–1 win over Kilmarnock — a driven strike from the edge of the box that brought fans to their feet. In total, he notched six goals and nine assists across all competitions in his debut season.

Then there was that performance in Nice. In a famous 4–1 Europa League victory away in France, Diomande seized on a defensive lapse to slide home Rangers’ second goal of the night — a moment that symbolised both his instinct and technical quality.

And in the Old Firm fixtures, he stood tall. His intensity off the ball, ability to absorb pressure, and mature game management were key to controlling the midfield in some of the season’s biggest fixtures.

Interest Building – But Are Rangers Ready to Sell?

With three years still to run on his deal, Rangers are under no pressure to sell. The club are reportedly reluctant to let him go — and rightly so. He’s a player the new head coach could build around.

But interest is growing. Everton, now managed by David Moyes, are said to be admirers. The Premier League club need midfield reinforcements after losing Orel Mangala and Abdoulaye Doucouré — and with Kevin Thelwell and Dan Purdy (both formerly of Everton) now part of Rangers’ football operations, there’s no doubt the player is firmly on their radar.

If an offer arrives — and all signs point to one coming — Rangers will have a major decision to make.

So, What’s Diomande Worth?

In our view, it would take a bid in excess of £12 million, with add-ons and a healthy sell-on clause, to even bring Rangers to the table. Given the market down south and Diomande’s potential, that figure could rise quickly if multiple clubs become involved.

And we’ve been here before. Rangers have often been criticised for holding on to players too long. The likes of Morelos, Kent, and Lundstram could’ve brought in serious money — but instead left for free. That’s a mistake the new regime doesn’t seem keen to repeat.

A New Model for a New Era

With Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises now at the helm, a more structured player trading model looks to be emerging. Their track record at Leeds United — selling smart, reinvesting wisely, and still achieving promotion — shows a clear strategy. Kevin Thelwell did similar at Everton under tight financial constraints.

Rangers have long talked about becoming a self-sustaining club through player trading, but now, for the first time, the pieces might be in place to make it happen.

The Final Word

If Diomande does depart this summer, Rangers will lose a rare combination of athleticism, technical skill and tactical intelligence — and a player fans genuinely believed could take his game to another level at Ibrox.

The question now is: can Rangers convince him his next chapter should still be written in Glasgow?
