It seems we can’t get through a transfer window without Ridvan Yilmaz being linked with a return to Turkey – and this summer is no exception. We’re only a few days into the window, and already the rumours are circling once more. But this time, it feels slightly different.

Last season, Yilmaz was Rangers’ first-choice left-back for much of the campaign. This season, however, has told a different story. Injuries have disrupted his progress, and inconsistency has become an issue. At times, he’s shown glimpses of the attacking, energetic full-back we hoped for – but other appearances have been marked by simple errors and shaky distribution.

What’s perhaps most telling is who has been keeping him out of the team. Jefte is a promising talent, but he hasn’t been faultless. He’s been caught out defensively more than once, and those lapses have cost Rangers valuable points. Despite that, Ridvan hasn’t been able to force his way into the starting eleven – even when fit. That alone raises alarm bells.

Should Rangers Cash In on Ridvan Yilmaz?

If an offer comes in over £2.5 million, Rangers should seriously consider accepting. That kind of fee would not only help fund a much-needed summer rebuild but would also remove a substantial wage from the books.

Let’s be honest – Rangers could likely invest that money into a player more physically suited to the Scottish Premiership and who offers more consistent availability.

The Physicality Question

Even in his better spells, Yilmaz has faced criticism over his physical presence. At 5’7”, he’s often targeted by opposition forwards – particularly the powerful strikers that are common throughout the league. While he’s stood up to the challenge at times, there have been matches where his lack of physicality has been exposed.

Flashes of Quality – But Too Infrequent

To his credit, Ridvan has had some bright moments. His first goal for the club – a composed finish in a 5–2 win over St Mirren in April 2023 – was a special moment, and his celebration showed how much it meant to him.

In December 2023, he produced a standout performance against Hibs at Ibrox, linking up brilliantly with the attack, delivering dangerous crosses, and reminding everyone of his attacking threat. But performances like these have been rare.

As the season wore on, it became clear that Ridvan himself was frustrated – both by his own form and the lack of opportunities. His body language on and off the pitch hinted at a player who knows his time at the club may be coming to an end.

Besiktas Move for Yilmaz Gathering Pace

Now, reports from Turkey suggest that personal terms have been agreed between Ridvan and Besiktas, and the Turkish club is in discussions with Rangers to finalise the deal.

Figures of around €6 million (just over £5 million) have been reported, but that feels overly ambitious. A deal closer to £4 million – potentially including add-ons – feels more realistic given his recent injury record and form.

If a deal is struck, Rangers would be wise to include a 20% sell-on clause. There’s clearly still talent in Ridvan Yilmaz, and he could flourish back in the Turkish Süper Lig. He’s just not quite been the right fit for Scottish football.

How this transfer is handled will be one of the first real tests for the new-look recruitment setup at Ibrox. Every deal this summer must be maximised, whether incoming or outgoing.

Should Rangers fans say Thanks and Farewell to Ridvan?

Clips of Ridvan Yilmaz at Rangers, watch out for the number of Dessers misses in these clips. Yikes! 🙂

If Yilmaz does depart, we should thank him for his efforts. He’s never lacked professionalism or effort – but sometimes a move simply doesn’t work out. That said, the questions around his recruitment – especially his suitability for the Scottish game – should be directed at the previous regime, not the player.
