Firstly, let us apologise about the delay in getting this match review done. Rangers Board Response Welcomed After VAR Farce at Easter Road

Rangers wrapped up the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign with a 2-2 draw at Easter Road, in a match that had a bit of everythingβ€”early goals, VAR controversy, standout saves, and flashes of quality from several Light Blues.

Dessers Hits 29 – and a Flying Start

Cyriel Dessers didn’t wait around. Just two minutes in, the Nigerian forward, fresh off notching his 50th goal for the club earlier in the week, added another to his growing tally. After a long ball forward from Hibernian’s Jordan Smith, Nico Raskin cleverly headed it back into danger. Dessers chested it down and rifled home a right-footed effort for his 29th goal of the season.

It was an ideal start, but Rangers were dealt an early blow soon after when Leon Balogun was forced off with a knee issue, replaced by Robin Propper.

A Game of Inches – And Frustration

The Light Blues thought they had a second when Diomande sent Raskin through and the Belgian slid it under the Hibs keeper. Rocky Bushiri tried to clear off the line, but replays suggested the ball may have crossed. No VAR intervention came, and to rub salt in the wound, Hibs raced up the other end to score through Kieron Bowie. A VAR check followed, but the equaliser stood.

Rangers pushed on. Tavernier’s free-kick and a Cerny effort tested Jordan Smith, who was quickly establishing himself as Hibs’ standout performer.

Raskin Restores the Lead – Briefly

After the break, it was Rangers back in front. Captain James Tavernier, who delivered several dangerous balls all afternoon, found Raskin with a pinpoint corner. The midfielder rose at the front post to nod Rangers ahead once more, capping a fine individual performance.

Tom Lawrence came on for Diomande as Ferguson looked to solidify midfield control, and Danilo nearly added a third following great work by Kasanwirjo and Cerny down the left, only to be denied by another smart save from Smith.

Boyle Levels as Smith Denies Rangers Again

Hibs weren’t done, though. With 66 minutes played, Martin Boyle rose to meet a Cadden cross and guided it past Butland for the equaliser.

Rangers introduced Oscar Cortes and Bailey Rice late on, both injecting energy, but the winner never came. Smith denied Danilo once more with a brilliant save in the dying minutes, and Boyle had a chance at the other end but overran it.

Reflecting on the Season Finale

It wasn’t the win Barry Ferguson and the fans had hoped for to close the season, but there were positivesβ€”Raskin’s all-action display, another goal for Dessers, and bright cameos from Cortes and Rice. It was a match that summed up the campaign: flashes of brilliance, but moments of frustration.

With managerial changes on the horizon and the squad set for another summer overhaul, the full-time whistle at Easter Road marked the end of a chapter. What comes next will be crucial.
