Cyriel Dessers of Rangers celebrates his goal with his team mates Nicolas Raskin, Hamza Igamane and Mohamed Diomande during the William Hill Premiership match at Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow.

Rangers signed off their home campaign for the 2024/25 season with a 3-1 win over Dundee United, thanks to a Cyriel Dessers double and a thunderous strike from Nico Raskin. In what may have been the final Ibrox appearance for several players, the crowd witnessed moments of quality, sentiment, and perhaps a hint of what’s to come.

Dessers Delivers – Again

Cyriel Dessers was in lethal form once more, heading in a beautifully delivered cross from Jefte to cancel out Dundee United’s early lead. The Nigerian striker added a second from the penalty spot in the second half – a classy gesture from captain James Tavernier, who handed him the opportunity to net his 50th goal in Rangers colours.

The penalty strike also takes Dessers to the top of the Scottish Premiership scoring charts with just one match remaining – a remarkable turnaround from a player who came under pressure earlier in the campaign.

Jefte Back on Song

Brazilian left-back Jefte looked back to his best, combining defensive stability with attacking flair. After a difficult few weeks, his confidence appears to have returned, and his pinpoint cross for Dessers’ first was a reminder of the quality he can bring when he’s in the mood.

Butland Solid on Return

Jack Butland returned between the sticks and was sharp early on, making a vital fingertip save to deny Sam Dalby just before United took the lead. There was little he could do about the opener – a free header from close range that left him exposed and searching for better protection from his defenders.

Raskin and Cerny Combine for a Cracker

The third goal of the night was arguably the pick of the bunch. Vaclav Cerny, who has been a creative force since joining, slipped a perfectly weighted ball into Nico Raskin’s path. Without breaking stride, the Belgian smashed it high into the net to put the result beyond doubt and send the Ibrox crowd into celebration.

A Wave Goodbye?

As the final whistle blew on Rangers’ last Ibrox outing of the season, there were some poignant scenes. Leon Balogun, Tom Lawrence and Vaclav Cerny each took a moment to applaud the supporters – a gesture that felt like a farewell. With contracts expiring and changes expected in the summer, this may have been the last time we see that trio in Light Blue at Ibrox.

Boardroom Eyes Watching On

Once again, Andrew Cavenagh and representatives of 49ers Enterprises were in the directors’ box, observing Rangers in action. Their consistent presence at recent games suggests further developments are to come.

Attendance Figures Scrutinised

While the club reported a crowd of over 50,000, the reality in the stands looked closer to 35,000. It’s becoming a point of frustration for fans, with many questioning the practice of counting all season ticket holders in the total regardless of actual attendance – especially at a midweek game at the end of a long season.
