Katie Wilkinson was simply unplayable at Broadwood as she fired five goals past a shell-shocked Motherwell to get Rangers Women back on track in emphatic fashion.
After a rare double setback in the league, Jo Potter’s side responded like champions – full of intent, hunger, and ruthless quality – sweeping aside the Lanarkshire visitors with a dominant 6-0 win that reignites belief heading into the season’s final run-in.
It was Wilkinson’s third hat-trick against Motherwell this season, but she didn’t stop there. The English striker added a fourth and fifth to her tally in a night where she tormented the Well defence from start to finish. Mia McAulay also found the net in a lively display that showed the young forward’s value to this side.
With five changes to the side that played midweek at Ibrox, Potter freshened things up and got an immediate reaction. McAulay’s early drive and trickery carved open the visitors and nearly led to an opener for Kirsty Maclean, who couldn’t keep her strike down.
Rangers looked dangerous from wide areas, with Kirsty Howat and McAulay pulling Motherwell’s shape all over the park. Wilkinson, always sniffing around for a chance, eventually broke the deadlock from close range after great build-up play involving Laura Berry.
From that point, the Gers didn’t look back.
A second goal arrived just after half-time, with Dutch defender Tessel Middag – on for the injured Kathy Hill – surging down the flank and delivering a pinpoint ball that McAulay gratefully tucked away. It was a wonderful moment of full-team play, initiated by defensive alertness and finished with attacking flair.
The third came from the spot after Wilkinson was brought down in the box. She dusted herself off and coolly dispatched the penalty with the kind of composure we’ve come to expect from our leading scorer.
The hat-trick was sealed late on when Cameron failed to hold McAulay’s shot and Wilkinson pounced to fire into the roof of the net. But she wasn’t done yet.
Two more strikes – a header at the back post and a sharp finish in the dying minutes – rounded off an astonishing personal haul and a result that sends a warning to the rest of the league: Rangers are not done yet.
With a huge trip to face Celtic on the horizon, followed by games against Hearts and Hibs, the Light Blues have picked the perfect moment to rediscover their swagger.
