Frustration. Missed chances. A costly result. Jo Potter’s Rangers side were second best under the lights at Ibrox on Wednesday night as they slumped to a 1–0 defeat against Glasgow City — a night that could well prove to be the final blow in this season’s SWPL title race.
After a positive Scottish Cup semi-final win at the weekend, Potter rang the changes with seven adjustments to the starting line-up. Jenna Fife returned in goal, and the backline was reshuffled with Kathryn Hill and Leah Eddie joining captain Nicola Docherty. Brogan Hay, Camille Lafaix, Chelsea Cornet and Jodi McLeary were all brought back in to inject freshness — but the energy levels on the pitch didn’t match the intent on paper.
Rangers actually started brightly, with Camille Lafaix rattling the bar in the opening five minutes following great work from Rio Hardy and Katie Wilkinson. That early promise, however, quickly faded. Despite a few half-chances, the Light Blues lacked precision and purpose, especially in the press, where Glasgow City consistently found space and punished Potter’s side in transition.
Glasgow City struck the decisive blow just before half-time. A quick break ended with Emily Whelan slipping in Brenna Lovera, and as Jenna Fife came out to deal with it, she clipped the striker. Penalty. Lovera made no mistake, and Rangers were suddenly staring down the barrel.
The second half brought changes — Kirsty Howat and Laura Berry entered to chase the equaliser — but it wasn’t to be. Howat’s chance straight at Lee Gibson summed up a night of tame efforts and missed connections. Even with five minutes of added time, Rangers looked blunt, and the final whistle confirmed a major setback in the title race.

With Hibernian now five points clear at the top, and Glasgow City leapfrogging Rangers into second, it’s hard to avoid the reality: Rangers have likely blown their shot at the SWPL title. They now need favours from elsewhere and must win out to even have a chance.
It was a lacklustre display at a time when energy and belief were needed most. The title may not mathematically be out of reach — but it now feels like the race has slipped from our hands.
