Rangers have officially confirmed the appointment of Kevin Thelwell as the club’s new sporting director, as the Ibrox hierarchy take a big step forward in reshaping the footballing structure.

Thelwell, 51, is currently Everton’s director of football, a post he was already set to leave at the end of the season. His move north signals a clear intent from the Rangers board to strengthen long-term strategy behind the scenes.

The club has been on the hunt for a new sporting director since February, with the process involving CEO Patrick Stewart, the specialist firm Sportsology, and 49ers’ technical director Gretar Steinsson. It’s understood that Thelwell’s wide-ranging experience at clubs such as Wolverhampton Wanderers and New York Red Bulls ticked all the boxes outlined by both Stewart and the consultants, who earlier this year advised a return to the sporting director model.

No sooner had the news broken than the rumour mill kicked into gear. Reports suggest that Thelwell wants to bring Everton’s academy director Gareth Prosser with him to Auchenhowie, underlining the priority being placed on player development.

It’s no secret that Rangers haven’t produced enough first-team regulars through the academy in recent seasons, and this potential move could be aimed squarely at fixing that. With the right structure in place, the club will be hoping to unearth more talent from within and ensure the pathway to the senior squad is stronger than ever.

Keep your eyes peeled – the rebuild behind the scenes is well and truly under way.
