As Rangers edge closer to the end of another turbulent season, club legend Ally McCoist has named two massive names who he believes could be the right fit for the manager’s job at Ibrox – but he’s also issued a word of caution.
Speaking to talkSPORT Bet, McCoist said both Jose Mourinho and Steven Gerrard would be ideal candidates to lead the Light Blues into a new era – provided the club are willing to back them properly.
Yes, I think both could fit the bill in terms of stature and what they’d bring to the club and Scottish football in general. But they’d both need proper financial backing. The current squad just isn’t strong enough.

McCoist’s comments come as the club continues to be led by Barry Ferguson in an interim capacity. Ferguson – another former Rangers icon – has been holding the reins while the board decides on a long-term appointment.
The 47-year-old has had a mixed run, winning four of his ten games in charge. But that tally includes a thrilling 3-2 win over Celtic in the league and an unforgettable European triumph over Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, going through on penalties over two legs to reach the Europa League quarter-finals. The journey ended in Bilbao, but not before Ferguson had made a statement of intent.
With the 49ers Enterprises expected to complete their takeover of the club in May, the permanent managerial appointment may be held off until that deal is finalised.
That means speculation will only intensify in the coming weeks – and McCoist thinks Gerrard could be tempted to return, if the conditions are right.
It’s absolutely vital that his next job is the right one, It didn’t quite work out at Villa or in Saudi Arabia. It’s similar to Frank Lampard—his move to Coventry has been crucial in getting his managerial career back on track. Steven’s in that same position. His next step needs to be spot on.

With Ferguson showing promise, Gerrard weighing his options, and Mourinho’s name still holding global gravitas, the next few months at Ibrox could define the club’s next decade.
